- Heyo, - Arghh. id:: 65c555bd-c114-4c74-8e2e-7f98e4b927e3 - I'll tell you a management secret today - you don't fight other people's battle. - ... - I learned this at Compass but I often make this mistake again only to be reminded of it in a way that resembles waking up from a painful dream. - I have learned this stranded and broken down in the battlefield; ill-prepared for a fight that was never mine. - You see - not all painful experiences are the learning experience. Some are just to to be outright avoided. - We work in a team towards a common goal; supporting each other and filling in the gaps where needed. Every one is different and bring different capabilities on to the table. Some have gaps. It's the filling of these gaps where the trapdoor to the unwarrnted battlefield lies. - Especailly if you are a high achiever. - So why did I jump in? What does anybody jump in? - You see when you become a manager a big part of your job is to control the narrative i.e to set the direction in which - you want - the story to unfold. You take responsibility for the outcomes. You build a team and rely on humans to be aligned with you in your mission. - Sometimes you make a hire that's exceeds your expectations; they fill gaps you didn't know you had. Sometimes you make a bad hire. A muscle to develop is fire them or re-position them asap to minimize damange. But most times you hire ok people - good in few things, could learn a few things, and gaps in some other. These are where your unwarrented battle door open up for you slip in. -
