And we are unconsciously attached to it to let it go - Rage collapsed:: true - He theorized a developmental line for narcissism, from the primitive to the fully mature. According to Kohut, narcissism is never given up, is potentially healthy and in a good environment develops into mature forms of self-esteem. - However, it was Kohut’s reference to what he called narcissistic rage that particularly interested me. He postulated that people with personality disorders emerged from childhood with an accumulated, permanent rage that he called narcissistic rage. He suggested that emotional trauma experienced during the developmental years of infancy and childhood was responsible for this rage. I wondered whether there might be some of this rage in all of us, but more particularly, whether it was pressure on this inherently narcissistic self residing in each of us that produced the anger-rage that seems to be responsible for mindbody disorders. This idea is developed more fully in the section that follows. - I believe that rage in the unconscious has three potential sources: 1. That which may have been generated in infancy and childhood and never dissipated 2. That which results from self-imposed pressure, as in driven, perfectionist or goodist people 3. That which is a reaction to the real pressures of everyday life - Both positive and negative stress generate unconscious anger, whether or not one is consciously angry. Accumulated anger is rage, and frightening, unconscious rage leads to the development of physical symptoms. - highlights - I have seen about ten thousand patients with TMS since 1973, most of whom have been rendered pain-free and fully physically active. This is science, too. - We have, on the one hand, the “hard,” or physical sciences that deal in numerical precision, prediction and experimentation. On the other hand, “soft” sciences that treat the complex objects of history in all their richness must trade these virtues for “mere” description without firm numbers in a confusing world where, at best, we can hope to explain what we cannot predict. The history of life embodies all the messiness of this second, and undervalued, style of science. #science - From Paralysis to Fatigue, that mindbody symptom choice is based on what is in vogue at the time and what has been legitimized as “physical” by doctors. - ==at the most fundamental level we do not yet understand brain function. Medical science, therefore, cannot dismiss the idea that in addition to speech, cognition and creativity, the brain can also cause physical symptoms.== - How does the brain induce TMS? Laboratory and clinical evidence suggest that it has chosen to work through the autonomic nervous system, the subsection of the central nervous system that controls the body’s involuntary functions, including the circulation of blood. By mildly restricting the flow of blood to the target tissues, it reduces the available oxygen. id:: 63384aa6-f7bc-4ffe-9ea5-c2c058e36950 - In my experience backache, stomachache and headache are almost always psychologically induced. - One of the most important clinical features of TMS is the tendency for sufferers to develop a specific pattern of pain, including what time of day or night they will have pain, what activities or postures will bring it on, what things they can and cannot do. These are programmed reactions.
